Technology, Innovation, Energy and Sustainability

Formerly was known as BEST (Bureau of Environment, Science, Technology and Natural Resources).

TIES has re-oriented its objective to provide strategic foresight, intelligence service, collaborative research and policy advice targeted at public, business and policy audiences/clients via dialogues, forums, policy briefs and consultancies in the following areas:

Technology
Collaboration with the government ministries, and related institutions (public and private sectors as well as academia and NGOs) Ā in this area, expanding from its previous work on Industrial Technology Development ā€“ A National Plan of Action. Ā

Innovation
Contribute to the implementation of the National Innovation Model.

Environment
Expanding research on previous work with Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) on Environment and Development and continued collaborative work with government agencies and research institutions

Sustainability
Cooperative research work on food security with institutes such as the Institute of Agricultural and Food Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Network of East Asian Think-tanks (NEAT), and other national. regional and international agencies.

TIES intend to leverage on ISISā€™ inherent strength and ability to bridge the public, private and civil society sectors as well as the local, national and regional (especially ASEAN, East Asia and Asia Pacific) perspectives/concerns. TIES has Ā also elected to have a policy and business slant in most, if not all, of its initiatives, given the growing importance of the private sector in Public-Private Partnerships, Corporate Social Responsibility, innovation, green technology, and food sustainability.

Towards these ends, TIES has drawn up the following initiatives and programmes:

  • Climate Change and Security Implications;
  • Green Technology: the Business of Greening and Eco-solutions;
  • Water Security and Sustainable Development: Twin Challenges of the 21st Century; and
  • Food Sustainability: Key Drivers, New Dimensions and Repositioning
  1. Climate Change and Security Implications

This initiative basically is built on the work initiated in 2009 in conjunction with CSCAP, on the security implications of Climate Change.

  1. Green Technology: The Business of Greening and Eco-Solutions.

TIES has links with Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, MOSTI and other government and non-government entities at both national and state levels in assisting and participating in some of the activities of these organizations to further study on this area of green technology.

CĀ Ā  Water Security and Sustainable Development: Twin Challenges of the 21st Century
This initiative builds on past effort on water resources, focusing on the dimensions of security.

  1. Food Sustainability: Key Drivers, New Dimensions and Repositioning

This initiative will build on existing collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry (MOAAI) Institute of Agricultural and Food Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia, FAO and the private sector in Malaysia and to link up with similar institutes in ASEAN and East Asia

Studies have shown there is a looming food crisis, rising energy prices, adverse weather patterns (El Nino coupled with severe and prolonged winter), pest outbreaks, and political situation of exporting and importing countries. Initiatives and research should focus on how the country of Malaysia and the region attain sustainability in food.
