Environmental Reforms for Malaysia Baru

13 May 2019
Malaysia has accumulated all kinds of environmental damages following decades of rapid industrialisation. Take water for example, five states are currently considered water deficit, while 377 rivers are getting narrower, shallower and lled with mud from unrestrained development. The pollution load on land also shows no sign of ebbing, with Malaysians generating about 38,000 tonnes…

Revitalising rural Malaysia

01 March 2019
IN 1948, Mahatma Gandhi envisioned that the future of India lay in its 700,000 villages. Thanks to rural employment schemes and agricultural prosperity, India today has 893 million in rural population, the largest in the world. Yet, by 2050, Gandhi’s foresight will be proven otherwise when urban Indians are expected to constitute the majority in…

The Future is Rural, Too

20 February 2019
It is convenient to think we now live in the age of urban triumph. In 2018, about 55 percent of the people on Earth resided in urban areas. As economic powerhouses and a nucleus of innovations, the top 600 cities in the world generate almost 60 percent of the global GDP. Apart from the natural…

Non-Alignment for Sustainable Development

31 January 2019
The year 1979 was a tumultuous one in international affairs. In February, Ayatollah Khomeini seized power in Iran, replacing the 2,500 old Persian monarchy with an Islamic theocracy. The same year saw 66 Americans seized as hostage at the US Embassy in Tehran by a group of students.  Many unsuccessful attempts were made to release…

LESSENING VULNERABILITY: Broader economic reforms necessary to deal with commodities boom-and-bust cycles THE era of oil shocks is far from over. The International Energy Agency…

MOSQUITO means "a small fly" in Spanish and Portuguese. Because it is small, it is all too usual to think that a mosquito is also simple. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not uncommon to hear of intellectual s going to prison. Some were placed under detention for being fiery advocates of subversive ideas.
