Senior fellow Thomas Benjamin Daniel shares insights into how the informal Asean troika can better position the bloc’s long-term response to the crisis in Myanmar. Such an approach was deployed in the run up to Cambodia’s admission to Asean in 1997.
He highlights Asean’s commitment to structured responses and lack of backtracking as a positive development. As the next Asean chair, Laos can count on Indonesia and Malaysia’s support in Myanmar-related matters, alleviating its burden as it manages other chair-related duties.
