Overview

The documentary, “Jihad Selfie”, traces the journey of a 16-year old Indonesian student in Turkey wishing to travel to Syria to join Daesh following a number of his friends. Filmed in cinéma vérité style, the documentary is produced by Noor Huda Ismail, founder of the Institute for International Peace Building in Indonesia and an expert on radicalisation and extremism. The filmmaker looks at the impact of Daesh’s online presence on young Indonesians and examines the stronghold of Daesh supporters in Lamongan, Jakarta, Cairo and on the border of Syria. The film also depicts interviews with returned Daesh fighters. The axis of this movie centres on the need to produce counter-narratives in response to Daesh’s campaign.
