At the conclusion of Australia’s 2013-14 term as an elected member of the UN Security Council, Mr Jon Merrill, will present on the challenges and opportunities the UNSC holds for an elected member. Speaking from Australia’s recent experience, Mr Merrill will address contemporary challenges to the UNSC (including the evolving nature of threats to international peace and security, the normative divide, upholding international law, the P5 stalemate), the prospects for UNSC reform, if serving on the UNSC is an end in itself or a means to an end, and how elected UNSC members can and do make a difference.
