ISIS INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

General Requirements

  1. Preference will be given to Malaysian applicants who have completed at least an undergraduate degree. However, Malaysian citizens who are required to perform internships as part of their final year of undergraduate studies will also be considered for the ISIS Internship Programme.
  2. In exceptional circumstances, consideration will be given to suitable and talented non-Malaysians studying in Malaysian institutions of higher learning.
  3. Strong preference will be given to applications for internship periods of at least two months.

Research Requirements
 1. Research Interns:

Although ISIS Malaysia’s Research Programmes have thus far considered applicants from diverse backgrounds, preference will be given to those with relevant qualifications as follows:

1.1 Economics Programme:
Economics, Political Economy, Business Administration, Finance, Banking, Accountancy or Political Science. Candidates from non-relevant disciplines are also encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate good writing skills and a strong knowledge of business and economics.

1.2 Foreign Policy and Security Studies Programme:
International Relations, Political Science, Strategic Studies, History or Area Studies (especially Southeast Asian or East Asian Studies). Candidates from non-relevant disciplines are also encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate good writing skills and a strong knowledge of international affairs.

1.3 Social Policy Programme:
Applicants with backgrounds in education or related disciplines are currently preferred for this Research Programme.

1.4 Technology, Innovation, Environment and Sustainability (TIES) Programme:
Environmental Sciences, Energy, Geography, Sociology, Policy Analysis or Economics. Applicants from non-relevant disciplines are also encouraged to apply if they are committed to work on environment, energy and sustainable development issues.

2. Events Management Interns:

Individuals interested in improving their knowledge and skills in planning and organising events, corporate communications and media relations will be attached to the Public Affairs and Conference Services (PACS) Division. Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications in Mass Communications, Hospitality Management, Events Management or Food Service Management.

3. Information Technology Interns:

Individuals with good knowledge in information technology (IT) and who wish to put their creative talents to use in helping to design and produce graphics for ISIS Malaysia’s presentations, publications and its website will be attached to the Information Services Division. Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications in Art, Graphics Design, Creative Multimedia or Mass Communications.

Recruitment and Selection Process
Applicants will be required to submit the following to the Head of Administration of ISIS Malaysia:   

  1. Curriculum vitae;
  2. Academic transcript;
  3. Cover letter; and
  4. For research interns only: writing sample (e.g., a recent term paper) of at least 1,500 words  

Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview at ISIS Malaysia. Those who are based outside the Klang Valley and are unable to travel specifically for this purpose can be interviewed by phone or Skype (during regular office hours, Malaysian time).

4. Research Interns:

Candidates for research internships may be asked to write a brief, 500-word essay within 45 minutes on a topic provided following their interviews. This exercise shall be aimed at testing their knowledge, their ability to present clear and concise arguments, and their command of the English language.
