International
Forum on “The Makkah Declaration: Implementing the Economic Agenda
of the Muslim World”
1-3 September 2007,
Hotel Nikko, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
In response to the serious political, socio-economic, cultural and scientific challenges faced by the Muslim world, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) had launched the Makkah Declaration, a ten-year strategic action plan in December 2005. The persistence of poverty, illiteracy and underdevelopment in some parts of the Muslim world necessitate a speedy and effective implementation of this action plan
Towards this end, the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia organized a high-level International Forum focused on the implementation of the economic and social development agenda outlined in the Makkah Declaration. The Forum, which brought together a select group of outstanding scholars, experts and policy makers from the academic community, the OIC, international institutions, global corporations and the international community, met in Kuala Lumpur from 1 – 3 September 2007.
The key objectives of the Forum were:
• To assess the current state of development in the Muslim world and to address the progress and constraints in the implementation of the development agenda of the OIC’s strategic action plan.
• To consider ways in which there could be more effective and speedy implementation of the OIC’s action plan; and
• To engage and mobilise support for the implementation of the action plan from the international community and the developed world.
The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi, Chairman of the OIC,
delivered the
Keynote Address.
