Overview

The 2019 Indonesian Presidential Election has been widely dubbed as a rematch of the 2014 political contest between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo Subianto. However, next year’s contest would quite likely play out differently due to the unusual emergence of vice-presidential picks by both candidates as well as the plethora of issues contested in the public space. This presentation will offer insights and multi-layered analyses on the much-anticipated showdown between the two camps as they compete for the top office in Southeast Asia’s biggest democracy. What and how are the factors such as party politics and personality affecting the election outcome? How does the society react to the policies and programmes offered by both sides? In the midst of the messy campaign period, which candidate has the best chance to emerge as a victor?
