Primas Inter Pares: Introducing the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), Malaysia

ISIS was established on April 8, 1983. It is registered under the Malaysia's Company Act 1965 as a Company Limited by Guarantee. An autonomous and non-profit organisation, ISIS Malaysia is engaged in a wide range of activities focusing on objective and independent policy research and fostering dialogue and debate between the public sector, the private sector and academia. In general, its programmes are directed towards five central areas of national interest:


(1) Defence, Security and Foreign Affairs.
(2) National and International Economic Affairs.
(3) Nation-Building.
(4) Science, Technology, Industry, Energy and Natural Resources.
(5) International Understanding and Cooperation.

 

Objectives of ISIS

(1) To undertake research in various and specific fields and conduct long-term analysis of public policies on national and international issues;

(2) To contribute towards efforts in promoting general and professional discussions on important national and international issues through the organisation of seminars, conferences and other activities;

(3) To provide an avenue and a forum for individuals, experts and intellectuals of various fields for the exchange of views, opinions and research in a free and conducive atmosphere;

(4) To disseminate information on research findings and other pertinent activities undertaken by or on behalf of the Institute;

(5) To provide library facilities on relevant subjects pertaining to national and international issues;

(6) To collaborate and cooperate with other bodies within or outside Malaysia for the furtherance of its objectives;

(7) To assist and guide students and researchers to conduct research on national and international issues.

The Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia was set up in 1983 as a nonprofit private company. In essence, ISIS Malaysia is the country's first think tank. Its primary concern is with the study of policy in five central areas of interest. These are:

(1) Defence, Security and Foreign Affairs;
(2) National and International Economic Affairs;
(3) Nation-Building;
(4) Science, Technology, Industry, Energy and Natural Resources;
(5) International Understanding and Cooperation.

Besides its permanent staff, ISIS Malaysia also engages independent experts from home and abroad for brainstorming sessions, discussions, and for research projects.
